Mediterraneans Abandon Diet, Get Fatter

The 'Mediterranean Diet' came to North America in the 1990's with full force, and has undoubtedly helped some Westerners manage their weight. But at the same time, America was exporting it's diet to Europe - and it doesn't appear that it's helping ANYONE but executives of food companies. This video takes a look at the phenomenon of young Mediterraneans rejecting their traditional diet, and paying a heavy price for it.

In the mid 1990's, a new fad swept America. It was not as popular as Beatlemania in the 60's, but it was better for our HEALTH. It was called 'The Mediterranean Diet', and it STILL continues to help some control their weight to this day.

But here's the irony: while America IMPORTS such diets to help control its growing health crisis, it also EXPORTS its own dietary habits around the WORLD. So, while we admire and adopt the traditional Mediterranean diet for its numerous health benefits, YOUNGER Mediterraneans are looking to the West, and finding much to love in fast food, processed meals, and heavy amounts of SUGAR. And they're beginning to pay the price.

But it's not just one region of the world undergoing this change. MANY countries once known for producing slender, healthy citizens are reaching CRISIS mode. Why exactly is this SHOCKING global transformation taking place, and how bad is it?

Let's dig a little DEEPER into this subject...

The Mediterranean is the most PICTURESQUE part of Europe, made up primarily of Italy, Greece, and Spain. Their geography and climate support a diet heavy in fish, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. All of these foods are known to encourage a healthier heart and slimmer waistline.

So, how is it possible that Greek and Italian children are the FATTEST in the world? Yep, even though North America has its OWN problems with overweight youth, Greece and Italy are actually #1 and #2 on this list. In Italy, nearly 40% of children are overweight by age EIGHT. How has their culture FAILED them?

Well, it HASN'T. But here's the funny thing about the Mediterranean diet: in decades past, it was eaten by Mediterranean PEASANTS because it was CHEAPER than other foods. In 2016, however, vegetables and fish are costing MORE, while another type is costing LESS - a lot less. THIS, of course, is PROCESSED food.

But, of course, price is not the ONLY consideration. Processed foods have swept the globe in recent decades because they just TASTE better. Food companies spend a lot of time ENGINEERING these foods with JUST the right amount of sugar, salt and fat so they hit what's called a 'bliss point'. What is the 'bliss point'? It's the point where we just want to keep eating MORE.

But it's NOT just the Mediterranean people abandoning their healthy habits. France was once known for producing some of the healthiest and SLIMMEST people in the world - citizens who lived long lives, and in style. But in modern times, France is a country that saw its obesity rate DOUBLE in just a 9 year time period, when it reached 11.3% in 2004. Today, it's over 14%. While this is still a far cry from America's 35%, the New York Times reported in 2006 that if child obesity rates in France continued to climb as dramatically as they were, France would hit an American-style crisis mode by the year 2020!

But perhaps none of this is as SHOCKING as what's happening in the DEVELOPING world. We often think of the developing world as a series of countries where food is more RARE than unhealthy. That's still true for hundreds of millions of people, but others in poor countries are taking advantage of cheap, unhealthy foods and becoming OBESE. In fact, some 900 MILLION citizens of developing countries are now overweight, a tricky situation when POVERTY makes it difficult to deal with the DISEASES that often come with weight issues.

Clearly, our food ENVIRONMENT is the biggest problem. Foods low in nutrition - and HIGH in excessive amounts of sugar, salt, and fat - are plentiful and CHEAP. But the world is ALSO becoming more sedentary, relying more on vehicles and other technology than ever before. These things may make our lives EASIER, but they also make our waistlines BIGGER - and our hospitals FULLER.

Now, we all like to know we're moving ahead in the world, and we all ADORE technology. But we can ALSO take valuable lessons from TRADITION, especially when it involves food habits that keep us SLENDER, and fight disease. Because when we look at the Western dietary influence, it doesn't matter whether you're in Naples, Italy or Boise, Idaho - it's clearly a recipe for DISASTER.
